Find out what makes you different as a business. What’s your differentiator?
Small businesses often struggle with understanding their purpose in business, who exactly they serve, and how best they can stand out from the crowd. In my own business, the first couple of years I struggled to understand my purpose as a business – my “why” or reason for existing. After overcoming that obstacle, it took another year of understanding who best I do business with and what made me different from any other IT consulting company in Austin, Texas.

Some IT service companies will fancy talk technologies and innovation to impress you with a technical sale. As much as I love connecting businesses with technology, I discovered our clients were OK with the fancy tech talk but they preferred us for one main reason: the experience! We don’t push the technology on the customer, we sell the experience, the convenience, and the many benefits the technology and our services provide to them. With this, our value proposition is captured more easily and the customer is able to see a clearer picture with what exactly they’re getting when purchasing managed IT services from us.
What’s Your Differentiator? How We Set Ourselves Apart From The Competition
A differentiator is your unique identifier and often times going to be what you do best. How you set your business to be different might not even be completely unique, but you might be doing it so well that you stand out from everyone else. Just remember, customer service and experience is everything. Whatever you do to stand out from the competition be sure it aligns with the interests of your target market and the clients you intend to serve.
Now, let’s apply this to your own business. Think about what sets you apart from the crowd. To understand your differentiator, you need to start with your purpose. Once you understand why you do what you do, translate that into a practical mission statement – something that simply states your grand design. Here’s a good example with our own purpose at ITC “Everything we do is to help businesses by supporting their IT saving them time and energy.” Our reason for existence is simple, easy to understand, and shows our clients the immediate benefit “more time and energy” we offer them. It’s easy for our clients and potential customers to see the positive impact we have on their company.
